Birding the Esplanade

Updated: Aug 9, 2023

Join the Mass Young Birders Club on Saturday, May 6th to bird the Esplanade as part of Big Day Boston!

This is a friendly competition to see as many birds as possible in the downtown Boston area and to better understand the biodiversity of the city. Although Big Day Boston is an all day experience, MYBC will be birding from 11am-1pm along the Esplanade to see what birds are floating along the Charles and throughout the different habitats found along the scenic walkway. We will begin our walk at the Hatch Memorial Shell and walk towards the Teddy Ebersol Red Sox Fields.

As always, this event is free, but registration is required.

If you are not an MYBC Club Member, you can sign-up here: MYBC Sign-up Forms

WHERE: We will start our walk at the Hatch Memorial Shell - 47 David G Mugar Way, Boston 02108

DATE: Saturday, May 6, 2023

TIME: 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

WHAT TO BRING:

  • Layers! Boston can heat up quickly, but it can also be windy!

  • Binoculars if you have them - we will provide them if you do not

  • Good walking shoes

PARKING: THERE IS NO PARKING AT THE HATCH MEMORIAL SHELL. There are many local parking garages in and around the area as well as street parking around Boston Common, which is about a mile walk to the Hatch Memorial Shell.

Consider taking public transportation:

  • Red Line: exit at the Charles/MGH stop and cross the Arthur Fiedler footbridge to the Esplanade.

  • Green Line: exit at the Arlington stop, walk up Arlington Street towards the Charles River, and cross the Arthur Fiedler footbridge to the Esplanade.

  • The commuter rail is a favorable alternative to driving and parking for Boston events.

ACCESSIBILITY: The route we will be walking is paved.
